There are all kinds of projects on crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter. One that caught our eye last week was GunDetect, which uses computer vision processing to automatically detect a firearm and alert the home or business owner by text.
The detector needs to be placed somewhere that has a clear view of the room, and requires a plug and WiFi connection in order for it to function properly. It is also connected to a dedicated cloud featuring deep learning software technology that analyses the images collected by the device.
GunDetect is currently on Kickstarter with a fundraising goal of $200,000. The team behind it plans to use the funding to refine the physical product and bring it into production early next year. For more information, please click here.
With gun safety such as huge issue in the US, GunDetect looks like an interesting idea. Even if this particular device doesn’t succeed, its deep learning algorithm has the potential to be modified for a much wider range of security-related image processing applications in the future. For that reason alone, it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on the progress of this project.
